Moving with Small Children

Moving with Small Children

Moving to a new home can be an exciting adventure, but when you have small children, it can also be a bit overwhelming for you and for them. It’s especially challenging if the move is out of town away from everyone and everything they know. Here are some tips to help make the process smoother and more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Tip 1. Prepare Them Early - Start talking about the move as early as possible. Explain what will happen and why. Books and stories about moving can also help them understand the process.

Tip 2: Involve The Kids - If feasible, take them house hunting with you and show them around the new area. Visit their favorite fast-food place in the new town to make it feel more familiar. Encourage them to help pack their own belongings; giving them small tasks can make them feel important and more in control. Normally, you would go through all their clothes and toys to trash or donate unwanted items. Avoid doing this as part of the move, as it may be upsetting for them to give away their things during an already stressful time.

Tip 3: Maintain Routines - Keep your child's daily routines as consistent as possible during the move, especially bedtime and mealtime schedules. Familiar routines provide a sense of security and normalcy amidst the chaos of moving. This consistency is particularly important if you will be staying somewhere temporarily, like a hotel because nothing will be familiar.

Tip 4. Pack a 'First Night' Box - Pack a special box with your child's favorite toys, books, pajamas, blanket or pillow and other comfort items. Include snacks. Having these readily accessible will help your child feel at home on the first night in the new house or at the hotel.

Tip 5. Say Goodbye Properly I- f you're moving far away, arrange a small goodbye party with their friends or a visit to their favorite local spots. This helps provide closure and makes the move feel like a positive event.

Tip 6: Explore the New Area Together - Once you’ve moved, take time to explore the new neighborhood together. Visit parks, playgrounds, and other kid-friendly places to help them feel excited about their new surroundings. Consider hosting a neighborhood party in your front yard that includes activities for kids. This is a great opportunity to meet neighbors and find out who has children close in age to yours.
